Xu Chao wins world championship; Toronto’s Chen Hongsheng takes third
The 16th World Xiangqi Championships in Vancouver produced two first-time world champions after dramatic knock-out games. They also produced a historic third place finish for Canada.
These results capped an organizational tour de force by the Canadian Xiangqi Federation and the Vancouver Xiangqi Association, who staged no less than nine international tournaments in eight days.

First came the American Individual Championships or Delson Cup, from October 4 to 6, and then came both the World Xiangqi Championships and the World Youth Championships, both under the umbrella of the Prored Cup, which was held at the Hotel Vancouver Airport in Richmond, BC from October 7 to 11.

Jia Dan scores major upset to win world women’s championship
The world women’s championship produced possibly its biggest upset ever. Tang Dan of Beijing, winner of three previous world championships, was beaten by Jia Dan of the US.

Each had won all her games in separate round robin sections followed by a semi-final game. In the final show-down and playing Red, Jia used just the sort of aggressive opening my teacher Ban Lo told me to use when I was learning Xiangqi. She allowed a dangerous looking black pawn to cross the river, but broke through in the centre and won with violent tactics.

As the World Xiangqi Championships were about to begin in Richmond BC, the American Xiangqi Individual Open produced a remarkable quadruple upset. This is not the outcome that Toronto Xiangqi fans were hoping for.

America Xiangqi Individual Open underway in Richmond – world championships to follow
The World Xiangqi Championships begin in Vancouver on Monday October 7, and before they begin, Vancouver’s organizational team is holding no less than three weekend warm-up tournaments.
The 2019 Delson Cup America Xiangqi Individual Open is comprised of an open tournament that started today and concludes on Sunday, and youth and women’s tournaments that take place tomorrow. The venue is the Lansdowne Shopping Centre in Richmond BC.
